Elia formed in 1998 with vocalist Elisa Rodrigues, guitarist Luís Ferreira, bassist Carlos Caetano, and drummer Miguel Constância. They released four studio albums between 1998 and 2008, starting with their self-titled debut and including 2001's 'Anjos.'
Their song 'Anjos' became particularly well-known, with Rodrigues' vocals often described as haunting over atmospheric arrangements that drew from folk and classical music. The band developed a sound that some found esoteric, but they maintained their approach through their final album 'Aurora' in 2008.
Their music has appeared in films and television shows since their active period ended.
