Archive material and source history
Elis Regiane was the stage name for Brazilian singer Elis Regina Carvalho Costa, born in Porto Alegre in 1945. Her mother was an opera singer, and she grew up listening to Brazilian artists like Pixinguinha, Dorival Caymmi, and Tom Jobim. She released her debut album 'Poema de Amor' in 1964.
Her voice had a distinctive phrasing and improvisational quality that earned her the nickname 'Pimentinha' (little pepper). She worked with musicians including Milton Nascimento, Gilberto Gil, and Chico Buarque, and recorded material across samba and bossa nova styles. One of her notable songs was 'A Hora da Vitória,' a Luiz Gonzaga and Humberto Teixeira composition she recorded in 1970.
Other songs in her catalog include 'Bálsamo,' 'Filho,' 'Me Adore,' 'Meu Amigo,' and 'Quem Louva Na Prova.' She died in 1982 at age 36.
