Elis Regina was born Elis Regina Carvalho Costa in 1945. Her father was a choirmaster, and she grew up singing in church and local choirs. By age 12, she had already won several vocal competitions.
In 1964, at 19, she released her debut album "Viva a Bossa Nova." The record showed her vocal range and her approach to gospel music, which sometimes drew criticism from traditionalists who preferred more conventional arrangements. She worked with a band called Os Ungidos, and songs like "Louvor Dos Ungidos" and "Está Tudo Bem" became part of her repertoire.
Her discography includes albums like "Elis & Tom" from 1974, "Falso Brilhante" from 1976, and "Luz das Estrelas" from 1982. She kept recording and performing through the early 1980s.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
