Elísio Mualumene grew up in Matalane, a rural village in Mozambique. He started singing as a child while herding cattle, picking up traditional rhythms from the area. In 1991, he worked with producer José Mucavele on the album 'Céu Azul', which included the title track that became a hit in Mozambique.
That album established him as a musician people listened to. He went on to record other albums like 'Terra Prometida' and 'Xitimela'. One of his songs, 'Tempo', appears among his most recognized work.
He has performed with artists including Gilberto Gil and Cesária Évora. His singing draws from Mozambican traditions without much studio polish, which gives it a direct, unadorned quality.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
