She was born in Atlanta in 1960. Her parents were musicians, and she grew up listening to Motown and 1960s folk-rock. In 2007, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and took a break from touring.
In 2019, she voiced support for the BDS movement regarding Israel and Palestine, which drew both criticism and support. The catalog includes her recordings of traditional songs like "Three Little Bird."
