Elkland formed in Seattle in 1997 with Matt Riggs on vocals and guitar, Joe Butcher on bass, and Chris Colston on drums. Their debut album 'A Long Way from Home' came out in 1999, featuring the single 'Abandon' which caught some attention with its direct approach to heartbreak.
They kept making records over the next two decades, putting out albums like 'All I Have to Offer Is My Own Confusion' in 2002 and 'Departures' in 2019. Their songs often dealt with personal themes, and tracks like 'Apart' and 'Everybody's Leaving' continued in that vein.
Riggs was the consistent presence through their run, handling most of the writing and fronting the band. Their music had a straightforward, guitar-based sound that fit with a lot of other indie rock coming out of the Pacific Northwest at the time.
