Ellen Ton came together in São Paulo in the late 1990s. The band started with vocalist and songwriter Ellen Oléria, guitarist João Viana, bassist Carlos Beil, and drummer Fabio Massena. Their early shows in the city's underground scene didn't always connect right away, but they kept at it.
Their song 'Rainha do Medo' became their most recognized piece. The band's lyrics often dealt with alienation and fear, which drew some criticism at the time for being too dark. But their live performances developed a strong following, built around Oléria's vocals and the group's atmospheric sound.
They released their debut album 'Medo' in 2001. The record carried the same themes that had defined their earlier work.
