Eloy Guellf

Eloy Guellf came up in Rio de Janeiro during the 1970s. He wrote songs that mixed Brazilian rhythms with direct lyrics, and one of them, "Pingo da Vela," came out in 1979. The song was taken up as a kind of anthem, its words read as a comment on the political climate under Brazil's military regime at the time.

His music and stance brought him into conflict with the authorities. He was detained for a period. He kept writing, and other albums followed, like 1977's "O Canto da Sereia" and 1983's "Terra da Gente." He worked with musicians including keyboardist Gilson Peranzzetta and bassist Paulo César Feital, and sometimes with other singers like Milton Nascimento.
