Elphame formed in 2007 with vocalist Amalie Bruun, guitarists Svend Sandstrøm and Ole Kristian Halvorsen, bassist Marius Strand, and drummer Steinar Krokstad. They started releasing albums in 2010 with Dark Wings of Steel, followed by The Seventh Key in 2012 and My Demons in 2015.
Their song Bloodstained Steel became something of an anthem for their fans. They put out Ophidian in 2019 and a compilation called Legacy in 2023. Bruun took a break from the band in 2017 and returned in 2019.
Their music leans on operatic vocals and symphonic arrangements, with lyrics that sometimes touch on mythology and history. Another track, Under The Dead Skies Of Alba, shows that side of their work.
