Elpho formed in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1990s with vocalists Rodrigo Suricato and Luê, guitarist Rodrigo Tavares, bassist João "Jão" de Paula, drummer Marcelo Costa, and percussionist Fábio Sorriso. They put out their self-titled debut album in 2002, which mixed funk, samba, and afrobeat.
Their song "Festa do Elpho" became their calling card, a track that captured their live energy. They followed up with live and studio albums like "Elpho ao Vivo" in 2005 and "Afrociberdelia" in 2007, which brought in some electronic and psychedelic touches.
Suricato's vocals and stage presence became central to the band's identity as they kept playing through lineup shifts. Their music sometimes drew criticism for being outspoken, but they kept at it, working from that Rio base.
