Erlend Øye records as EMA, a Norwegian musician who began releasing music under that name around 2007. The name EMA is an anagram of Øye's own, suggesting something personal and inward-looking.

A clearer picture emerged with the 2009 album 'Past Life Martyred Saints,' which brought wider attention. Songs from that period, like 'The Grey Ship,' combined raw emotion with experimental production, landing with a particular intensity that defined the project's early reputation. Other tracks from that era, including '3Jane' and '100 Years,' followed a similar path of introspective lyrics meeting haunting, sometimes abrasive arrangements.

Øye has worked with other artists over time, including St. Vincent and Glasser, which introduced different textures to the music. The sound has incorporated elements from ambient and electro-pop, though it remains anchored in a distinctly personal, experimental approach.
