Emery formed in Seattle in 1997 with Toby Morrell on guitar and vocals, Aaron Powell on bass, Dave Powell on drums, and Derek Welsh on guitar. They put out an EP called "The Weak's End" in 2000. Their 2002 album "The Question" was a breakout, with the single "The Ponytail Parades" connecting with listeners.
Their sound shifted over the next few records, pulling in different textures while keeping a post-hardcore foundation. They released albums like "I'm Only a Man" in 2006 and "In Shallow Seas We Sail" in 2011. Songs like "Don't Waste Your Breath" and "Fractions" show their range from driving intensity to more reflective moments.
Emery's catalog includes several full-lengths and EPs, with "Low Season" arriving in 2016. The band's work has stayed focused on detailed arrangements and layered vocals, maintaining a dedicated following through the changes.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
