Emily Kokal co-founded the experimental rock band Warpaint in 2004 with Theresa Wayman, Jenny Lee Lindberg, and Stella Mozgawa. Their debut album 'Exquisite Corpse' came out in 2009, followed by several others including 'Warpaint' in 2010 and 'Heads Up' in 2014. The band developed a cult following for their atmospheric sound.
In 2016, Kokal began releasing solo work. Her self-titled debut album from 2017 included the track 'Oh La La,' which became her most recognizable solo song. She followed it with another album called 'A Pinch of Salt' in 2022. Her solo material tends toward more intimate, ballad-like territory compared to Warpaint's layered arrangements.
Kokal has worked with other artists including Bon Iver, Tame Impala, and Kurt Vile. Her songwriting often explores introspective themes, as heard in tracks like 'Dark Flowers' and 'Despite The Crossfire.' She continues to balance her solo projects with Warpaint, which released 'Radiate Like This' in 2020.
