Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate) started in 2005 after Keith Freund's previous bands ended. He worked with bassist Kevin Dye and drummer Gregg Latterman to form the core trio. Their debut album 'The Earth Is Humming' came out in 2007.
Their songs like 'Keep What You Have Built Up Here' and 'How to Make Love Stay' had Freund's introspective lyrics over indie rock arrangements. The band followed with albums including 'What It Takes to Move Forward' in 2009 and 'You Will Eventually Be Forgotten' in 2011.
Latterman left the band in 2008, but they kept recording and touring. Their long, poetic song titles became something of a signature, like 'Everything Is Connected and Everything Matters (A Temporary Solution To A Permanent Problem)' and 'I Am a Snail, and You Are a Pace I Cannot Match'.
