Bricht dann der Tag herein mit Macht,

Der Kämpfer schöpfet neue Kraft
Für eine grosse Schlacht.
Das kleine waldumsäumte Tal
Geflutet wird mit Licht
Erfüllt wird's bald von Schwertern, Schilden
Rittern, dicht an dicht.
Welch wundersame Spannung,
Sich in den Helden regt;
Die rünst'ge Lust zum Kampfe,
Sie durch die Lande trägt.
Der Klang von fremdem Horne,
Weckt ungeahnten Mut,
Die gellnden Kampfesschreie
schürn´ noch des Ritters Wut.
In wildem, stürm'schen Laufe
Geht's in die Schlacht hinein
Des Gegners Helme blitzen
In strahlend weissem Schein.
Die Schwerter zucken nieder
Von ärstem Hass geführt
Sie metzeln Fleisch und Knochen,
Sie schlachten ungerührt.
Nach Stunden rohen Wütens
Der Boden blutdurchtränkt,
Das Gras bedeckt mit Leichen
Der Tag zur Nacht sich senkt.
