Michael Cretu's project mixed sacred sounds and synths into a global hit in the early '90s.
For the full Enigma vibe, 'Principles Of Lust' is the blueprint, and 'Return To Innocence' is the later hit that stuck to it.
Enigma's first album MCMXC a.D. landed in 1990 with 'Principles Of Lust: Sadeness/find Love/sadeness', a track that spliced Gregorian chant onto a dance beat and became an international phenomenon. That sound, chant vocals over electronic production, defined the project and influenced a lot of electronic and new age music that followed. Songs like 'Return To Innocence' kept that atmospheric style going for years.
Enigma started as Michael Cretu's studio project in the early 1990s. The first album was followed by records like The Cross of Changes in 1993 and Le Roi Est Mort, Vive Le Roi! in 1996, with periodic releases continuing into the 2010s.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
