Enon was an experimental rock band from Philadelphia that formed in 1998. The group started with John Schmersal on vocals and guitar, Rick Lee on bass and vocals, and Matt Sweeney on guitar and vocals. They put out four studio albums between 2000 and 2005: 'High Society,' 'Believo!,' 'Hocus Pocus,' and 'Lost in Translation.'
Their music had an angular, atmospheric quality that didn't always fit neatly into rock conventions. Songs like 'Blow Infinite Ways' and 'Candy' moved with a kind of restless energy, mixing post-punk textures with electronic touches. The band's approach drew mixed reactions from critics and audiences who weren't sure what to make of their structural experiments.
Matt Sweeney left in 2006 to work on solo material, and Enon continued as a duo of Schmersal and Lee. They released an EP called 'Cut Out the Lights' in 2008 before announcing an indefinite hiatus in 2011. Their catalog, including tracks like 'Carbonation' and 'Conjugate The Verbs,' remains a particular kind of Philadelphia artifact, sharp, unsettled, and quietly influential in certain corners of experimental rock.
