Archive material and source history

Equ is an Italian musical collective that formed in the early 2000s. Their sound draws from traditional Italian folk but incorporates ambient and electronic textures. The group includes Francesca Sangalli on lead vocals, Andrea Parodi on acoustic guitar, Maurizio Fiordiliso on keyboards and accordion, and Alessandro Gwis on bass.

Their 2004 self-titled debut album established their approach, blending ethereal vocals with acoustic instrumentation. They followed it with more experimental work like 2007's "Echo" before returning to acoustic folk influences on 2010's "Terzo." Songs like "Carezze Di Passaggio" and "Cecilia" show their range.

In 2008, their performance of "Carezze Di Passaggio" at the Sanremo Festival drew criticism from some who interpreted its lyrics as promoting violence against women. The group denied this, saying it was about complex relationships. Earlier, Sangalli's vocal cord hemorrhage had threatened their progress.

They released "Equ IV" in 2013, continuing to explore themes through their layered sound.
