During World War II, Toivonen left his hometown and played music for soldiers. After the war, he returned to Finland and built a career performing polka music. His recordings reached audiences in Europe, North America, and elsewhere.
Toivonen recorded for decades, and his take on 'Säkkijärven Polkka' remains familiar in Finland. He died in 1989.
