Background notes

Archive material and source history

Esther Phillips was born in Galveston, Texas in 1935. She grew up singing in gospel choirs after losing her parents and spending time in orphanages and foster homes. That early church background gave her voice its distinctive raspy quality, which she later brought to soul and R&B.

In 1964 she recorded "And I Love Him," a slow, aching version of the Beatles song that became her signature track. Her take on "Use Me" and "Alone Again (Naturally)" showed how she could turn pop material into something more intimate and weathered.

Phillips struggled with drug addiction and mental health issues throughout her career, which sometimes interrupted her momentum. Still, she kept recording into the 1970s, putting out albums like From A Whisper To A Scream and Capricorn Princess. Esther Phillips died in 1984, but her recordings, especially those from the mid-60s through the early 70s, still sound direct and unvarnished.
