Editor's note

Eterna blended classical and pop in 1990s Italy

An Italian ensemble that found its voice where sacred music met contemporary arrangements.

If you want the essence, listen to "Da Pacem Domine" and "Working Man." That's the span they worked in.

Eterna mattered because they made ancient texts feel immediate. Their 1997 album "Da Pacem Domine" turned a Latin peace prayer into something you could hum. Songs like "Working Man" showed they weren't just doing museum pieces.

They started in 1990 with Andrea Bocelli among the founders. The 1997 album was the turning point, and they kept recording after Bocelli went solo.

Eterna formed in 1990 as an Italian ensemble exploring where classical and pop music meet. The group included Andrea Bocelli, Alberto Veronesi, and Fabio Baglioni at the start. Their early work faced some skepticism from classical circles, but they kept at it.

In 1997, Eterna released the album "Da Pacem Domine," which became their breakthrough. The title track, a version of the ancient prayer for peace, found an audience across Europe. It's one of the songs people still know them for, along with "The War Is Over" and "Working Man."

After that album, Eterna put out other records like "Cantate Domino" and "Libera Me." Bocelli eventually left to work on his solo career, but the group continued with its core members.
