Eternal Winter formed in Finland in 2005 with vocalist Lotta Hämäläinen, guitarist Jari Mäkikangas, bassist Juha Telenius, and drummer Jouni Saari. Their early material showed the influence of bands like Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride, leaning into gothic and atmospheric doom metal.
In 2009 they released their debut album, Within the Castle Shadowgate. The title track became a signature piece for the band, built around Hämäläinen's vocals and the group's melancholic, dramatic arrangements. Hämäläinen left in 2012 and was replaced by Katriina Wiik, whose voice brought a different intensity to the music.
They've continued putting out albums roughly every few years, including The Last Snows in 2012, a self-titled record in 2014, Shadows of the Sun in 2018, and Beyond the Veil in 2022. Their sound has remained rooted in that symphonic, shadowy metal space, with lyrics often circling themes of loss and despair.
