Background notes

Archive material and source history

The Exciters formed in New York City in 1961, starting with Brenda Holloway, Lillian Walker, Erma Franklin, and Barbara Mason. Franklin and Mason left soon after, replaced by Carol Twombly and Annette Beard. They signed with Atlantic Records in 1963 and released their debut album 'Tell Him,' with the title track becoming their biggest hit. That song reached number six on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the R&B charts.

Brenda Holloway was the group's lead singer but struggled with personal issues that affected performances. She was fired in 1965 and replaced by Ruth Brown. The band released several albums through the mid-1960s including 'Do the New Exciters' and 'C'mon Now,' but lineup changes and internal tensions contributed to a decline in their popularity.

Their music blended soul, pop, and doo-wop with tight vocal harmonies. In 2019, the Exciters were inducted into the Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame.
