Exemplo formed in São Paulo in 1993, with André Aquino on vocals, Leonardo Gonçalves on guitar, Rodrigo Maia on bass, and Andreia Guerra on drums. Their debut album 'Deles é o Reino' came out in 1995 and found a substantial audience among Brazilian evangelical listeners. The record included songs like 'Em Direção a Cristo' and 'Planos de Bem' that mixed straightforward worship lyrics with rock arrangements.

As their popularity grew through the late 1990s and early 2000s, Exemplo faced criticism from some religious quarters who felt their sound leaned too secular. They kept recording regardless, putting out albums like 'A Casa é Sua' in 1997 and 'Geração Eleita' in 2002. Their 2004 acoustic album and a 2006 live recording showed them adjusting their approach while maintaining the same core lineup.

Later releases included 'Manifesto' in 2008 and 'Pra Sempre' in 2011. In 2019 they revisited their 1999 album with 'Nação Santa 20 Anos'. Throughout their run, songs like 'Nosso Evangelho' and 'Intro Nosso Evangelho' remained fixtures in their setlists, offering a blend of congregational singing and band-driven rock that resonated with a particular segment of Brazilian Christian music listeners.
