Archive material and source history
Extol formed in the late 1990s in Bjugn, Norway, with Tor Magne Gjertsen on vocals, David Husvik on guitars, John Robert Morken on bass, and Christer Espevoll on drums. Their debut album 'Burial' came out in 1998, followed by 'Undeceived' in 2000 and 'Blueprint' in 2001. They were known for playing melodic death metal with Christian themes.
Songs like 'A Gift Beyond Human Reach' and 'Behold The Sun' show their style, heavy guitar work and Gjertsen's vocals over spiritual lyrics. They built a following in Christian metal circles, though some listeners questioned how their sound fit with their faith.
In 2005, bassist John Robert Morken was diagnosed with a brain tumor. He died in 2007, which affected the band deeply. Extol kept making music after that, but Morken's death marked a difficult period for them.
