Fabián Elías came from Chiautempan, Tlaxcala. He started singing early, influenced by Mexican folk and banda music. In the late 1990s, he formed the band Sentimientos de Cartón with some other musicians.
Their debut album came out in 2000, and the title track 'Sentimientos de Cartón' became a hit. The song 'Tal Vez' also got attention. The band released more albums like 'Corazón de Papel' in 2002 and 'Lágrimas de Amor' in 2005.
In 2004, there was a plagiarism case about one of their melodies. The band was cleared after a legal process. Elías kept singing with the group, which had members like Roberto Velasco on accordion and Sergio Romero on bass.
