Fabulla

Fabulla formed in Salvador, Bahia in the late 1990s as a trio with Luciana Alves, Juliana Linhares, and Larissa Luz. They worked with Brazilian rhythms like samba and bossa nova, but their approach was more about blending those sounds with contemporary ideas than about strict tradition. Their debut album, simply titled 'Fabulla,' established their approach with intricate harmonies and soulful vocals.

They released other albums including 'Além do Mar' and 'Leve.' Their song 'A Borboleta E O Grilo' became particularly well-known, a ballad about a butterfly and a cricket. Other tracks like 'Á Lua' and 'Canção Aos Montes' show their range within that blended style.

Luciana Alves handled lead vocals, Juliana Linhares played bass and wrote much of the material, and Larissa Luz was the percussionist. Their music drew from the rich musical setting of Bahia but filtered it through a trio format that allowed for both harmony and rhythmic experimentation. They weren't trying to recreate a pure sound so much as find a new space within familiar elements.
