Face First came out of the Los Angeles punk scene in the early 1980s. Their debut album 'Loose Lips Sink Ships' arrived in 1983. The track '1984' from that record became a defining song for them, drawing on George Orwell's novel to critique surveillance and authority. It sparked plenty of debate at the time.
They put out several albums through the decade, like 'Slightly Damaged' in 1985 and 'Preparations for Departure' in 1987. Other songs in their catalog include 'A Future Like Ours' and 'Color Blind'.
Internal tensions and shifting personnel were part of their story, with musicians like guitarist Patrick Steen and bassist Dave Smalley coming through the group. Their sound had roots in acts like the Ramones and the Clash. They kept recording into the late '80s with albums such as 'The Sword' in 1989.
