Faction came together in Southern California during the early 1980s, drawing from the straightforward punk energy of bands like The Ramones and Black Flag. Their original lineup included Dave Nazworthy on vocals and guitar, Chris Ashworth on guitar, Mike Grijalva on bass and vocals, and Roger Herrera on drums. They put out their first EP, 'A Cold Day in Hell,' in 1984.

Songs like 'I Decide for Me' and 'Always Wanting More' from their catalog carried that fast, direct punk sound. Their track 'Skate And Destroy' from 1985 connected strongly with the skateboarding scene at the time. They followed it with albums like 'Crank It Up' in 1986 and 'No Warning' in 1987 before releasing 'Episodic' in 1990, the year the band stopped playing together.
