FÁIL formed in 2009 in Glenties, County Donegal, Ireland, with siblings Úna and Seán Róisín Ní Chonaola at the center. The band's name means "veil" in Irish, which fits the gauzy quality of their music. They blend traditional Irish melodies with contemporary instrumentation, though that approach initially met some skepticism.

Their song "A Solas" became their most recognizable piece. It's a haunting track that caught attention when they performed it at the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest, where it received mixed reactions from critics. The band's core members include Úna Ní Chonaola on vocals and fiddle, Seán Róisín Ní Chonaola on guitar and vocals, and Eamon Murray on piano and synths.

In 2015, violinist Seán Óg Steen left the group, citing creative differences. This led to a brief hiatus before FÁIL returned to recording and performing.
