Fairlight formed in 1983 around singer Barbara Gaskin, with musicians including Steve Parry, Simon Fox, and Alan Parsons. Their debut single 'Dreamquest' came out that year, built around Gaskin's vocals and an electronic sound. They released their self-titled album in 1985.
A second album called 'Contact' followed in 1986, moving further into experimental electronic territory. The band went on hiatus later that year, and Gaskin began working solo. Some other members formed a group called Time and Tide, which put out an album in 1987.
Fairlight's recordings like 'Fields' and 'Le Bal Des Eternels' have a particular quality, layered keyboards, drifting melodies, and Gaskin's clear voice floating above it all. It's music that feels both precise and dreamlike, of its mid-80s moment but not entirely bound by it.
