Fake Illusion formed in São Paulo in 1988, with vocalist André Matos and guitarist Edu Ardanuy at the core. Their debut album 'Fantasma da Ópera' came out the following year, featuring the track 'À Beira da Loucura' that became an early signature. They followed with albums like 'No Mundo da Ilusão' in 1990 and 'O Signo da Luz' in 1992, building a following in Brazil's rock scene.
Matos left the band in 1993, replaced by Alexandre Conti on vocals. The group continued releasing albums through the 1990s, including 'Fábrica de Ilusões' and 'A Lua em Chamas', but never quite matched their earlier momentum. Other songs from their catalog include 'Álcool', 'Falsa Ilusão', and 'Marionetes Do Sistema'.
In 2011, a tribute album featuring covers of Fake Illusion songs by various Brazilian rock bands was released. The original lineup included Matos, Ardanuy, bassist Fabio Ribeiro, and drummer Ricardo Confessori during their initial run.
