Editor's note

Fame Musical's 1980s pop-rock anthems and quiet moments

A band built around Emily Carter's voice and songs about youth, ambition, and the stage.

For the big anthem, it's "Fame." For something more intimate, try "Think Of Meryl Streep." That contrast tells you most of what you need to know.

They had a knack for writing songs that felt like scenes from a play. "Fame" is the obvious one, but a track like "Think Of Meryl Streep" shows a quieter, more reflective side. Their music captured that specific feeling of wanting to be seen, for better or worse.

They formed in the early 1980s with Emily Carter and Ethan James at the center. Their 1985 album 'Youthful Rebellion' had their signature song, and they kept recording through the 1990s before stopping in the early 2000s.

Fame Musical was a band that formed in the early 1980s around lead singer Emily Carter and guitarist Ethan James. They were joined by bassist Ben Taylor and drummer Lucy Davis. Their song "Fame" became one of their most recognizable tracks, along with others like "Let's Play A Love Scene" and "Remember My Name."

Their 1985 album "Youthful Rebellion" included what would become their signature song, though the existing history refers to it as "I'm Gonna Live Forever" while the song list shows simply "Fame." They followed with "Dreams of Tomorrow" in 1988. The band faced criticism at times for what some saw as commercialism, but they kept recording through the 1990s.

Fame Musical stopped performing together in the early 2000s. A compilation called "The Best of Fame Musical" came out in 1995, collecting their work from that period.
