The Caymmi family's music comes from Salvador, Bahia, where Dorival Caymmi started writing songs about the sea and local life. He was sometimes called 'The Poet of the Sea.' His wife Stella Maris sang with him, and in 1954 their children Nana, Dori, and Danilo formed Família Caymmi as a group.

Their songs like 'Você Já Foi À Bahia' and 'Acontece Que Eu Sou Baiano' draw on Bahian rhythms. They worked with other Brazilian musicians including Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso. The family kept performing together for decades, with Dorival's children continuing to play his material alongside their own.
