Faraway formed in 1996 with Ethan James on vocals and guitar, Oliver Hayes on bass, and Jack Carter on drums. They started playing shows that didn't quite land with critics at first, who seemed unsure what to make of their sound.
In 1999, the band released their debut album 'Echoes of Silence,' which included the song 'Wendy Clear.' That track, written by James after a dream, became their breakout. It had a drifting melody and lyrics about unrequited love that connected with listeners.
Oliver Hayes left the band in 2005 and was replaced by Emily Carter, Jack's sister. Faraway kept putting out albums like 'Whispers of Dawn' in 2002 and 'The Edge of the World' in 2007, though none reached the same commercial height as their first record.
