Fat formed in 1999 with Mike Patton on vocals, Trey Spruance on guitar, Kevin Rutmanis on bass, and Joey Baron on drums. They came out of San Francisco and put out their first album, 'Why Do Birds Sing?', in 2001. The track 'Downtime' from that record got some attention in underground circles.
Their sound mixed progressive rock with jazz and electronic elements, which made them stand out from other bands at the time. They followed up with albums like 'Remission' in 2002, 'From the Cradle to Enslave' in 2004, and 'Passage of Burials' in 2005.
Patton's stage presence and the band's lyrics sometimes drew strong reactions.
