Fat Pat was Patrick Hawkins from Houston, Texas. He worked with DJ Screw in the Screwed Up Click during the 1990s, making Southern hip-hop with the chopped-and-screwed sound that defined that Houston scene. His 1998 track "Body Roc" got attention on radio and in clubs.
His songs like "Ghetto Dreams" and "Do U Like What U See" had a raw, rhythmic quality, with his vocals riding those hypnotic beats. The music wasn't polished, but it had an energy that connected.
In 1999, Fat Pat was shot and killed at a Houston nightclub. He was 27. His posthumous album "Fat Pat: Screwed Down to the Bone" came out in 2000.
