Fawkoju formed in Paris in the early 2000s. Their name plays on the fashion label Fauchon, which hints at their interest in the ephemeral. The band's lineup included Laurent Castelnau on vocals, Jean-Emmanuel Haby on guitar, Pierre-Antoine Badaroux on bass, and Antoine Boistelle on drums.
They broke through in 2003 with the single "C'est comme ci, c'est comme ça." The song's mix of rock, electronic, and African rhythms caught attention, though some listeners found their approach too experimental. Their debut album, also called Fawkoju, came out that same year.
They released several more albums, including Encore in 2005, L'Homme Volant in 2009, La Fille du Soleil in 2013, and Les Passagers du Temps in 2017. Castelnau wrote most of their lyrics, which often dealt with love and identity.
