Editor's note

Fergie Frederiksen, the Toto singer who went solo

A voice that carried Toto through the late '70s and early '80s, then found its own path.

For his Toto years, 'Isolation' gives you the feel. From his solo stuff, 'Oh Diane' holds up as a straightforward melodic rock tune.

He was the lead vocalist on Toto albums like 'IV' and 'Isolation,' bringing a soulful rock edge to the band's polished sound. After leaving, his solo work included the Diane Warren co-write 'Angel Don't Cry' and songs like 'Oh Diane' that leaned into melodic rock. His catalog isn't huge, but it's a solid chapter in that era of AOR.

He joined Toto in 1977 and sang on five studio albums through the mid-'80s. After departing in 1986, he released his solo debut 'Frederiksen' the next year, featuring ballads and rock tracks.
