Fernando Moura came up in Recife, Brazil, where he grew up with samba and forró. He started writing songs that leaned into the kind of lyrical depth you'd hear from Chico Buarque or Caetano Veloso. In 1989, he and guitarist Alberico Aspra formed a band under his name. Their first album came out in 1992, anchored by the title track 'Não Venha Mim Dizer'.
That song became a hit, carried by Moura's voice and the record's mood. Around the same time, his personal life drew attention for drug rumors and a 1993 cocaine possession arrest. He kept making music through it, but the noise around him never really quieted down.
