Fernando Noronha & Black Soul formed in the late 1960s, taking their name from the Brazilian archipelago Fernando de Noronha. The band was fronted by vocalist and guitarist Fernando Noronha, with a lineup that included Renato Vasconcelos on bass, Zélio Morais on drums, and Ruy Quaresma on keyboards. They released their self-titled debut album in 1970.
In 1971, they put out the song "Rock 'n' Roll Tonight," which became something of an anthem but also drew criticism from conservative quarters. Other tracks from their catalog include "White Trash," "10,000 Miles," "Ain't No Angel," and "Blues From Hell." They followed up with albums like "Tempo de Mudança" in 1973.
Their music mixed rock 'n' roll with soul and Brazilian touches. A compilation called "O Melhor do Rock Brasileiro" came out in 1991. The band's sound was straightforward and energetic, built around Noronha's presence and a steady rhythm section.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
