Background notes

Archive material and source history

Fifth Avenue formed in the mid-1990s with four childhood friends from Los Angeles suburbs: Ethan James on vocals and guitar, Jake Miller on bass, Sam Carter on drums, and Emily Rodriguez on keyboards. They put out a debut EP in 1997 and followed with a self-titled album in 2000 that included the song "A Different Life." That track got radio play and brought them some mainstream attention.

Around 2001, the band faced accusations that they'd plagiarized the melody for "A Different Life" from another group. Internal tensions grew, and Carter left after a fight with James in 2004, which led to a break.

Fifth Avenue came back in 2006 with a second album called "Redemption." The sound was darker and more introspective than their earlier work. They kept recording through the end of the decade, with songs like "Spanish Eyes" and "Infidelity" appearing in their catalog.
