The Fifth Dimension formed in Los Angeles in the early 1960s with five vocalists: Marilyn McCoo, Billy Davis Jr., Florence LaRue, Lamonte McLemore, and Ron Townson. They started as The Hi-Fi's, playing local clubs before signing with Soul City Records in 1966 and changing their name. Their debut single "Go Where You Wanna Go" got radio play, and songs like "Up, Up and Away" and "Wedding Bell Blues" followed.
Their version of "Age of Aquarius" from the musical Hair became a massive hit around 1969, topping charts and winning Grammys. The song's hopeful tone connected with the era's mood. Other tracks like "Last Night I Didn't Get To Sleep At All" and "Never My Love" showed their smooth vocal blend of pop and soul.
In 1975, McCoo and Davis Jr. left to work as a duo, replaced by new singers for a time. The group kept recording through the 1970s with albums like The Magic Garden and Love's Lines, Angles and Rhymes. Their sound mixed pop harmonies with touches of jazz and gospel, heard on songs such as "California Soul" and "Blowing Away."
