Filhas de Bamba formed in Salvador, Bahia in 1997 as an all-female Brazilian music collective. Their self-titled debut album came out the following year, featuring songs like 'O Mar a Lua e Eu' that drew from samba, bossa nova, and Afro-Brazilian rhythms.
Their lyrics often addressed social issues, which sometimes drew criticism alongside the praise for their music. Founding member Ana Paula Albuquerque once said they wanted their music to be a tool for dialogue.
After that first album, they released several others including 'Canto das Filhas' in 2001, 'Rara' in 2006, and 'Capoeira' in 2011. Songs like 'A Procura do Zeca' and 'Contramão' continued their exploration of Brazilian musical traditions.
