Fireforce formed in Sheffield in 1983 with Paul Shortino on vocals, Stuart Smith on guitar, Dave Kemp on bass, and Pete Newdeck on drums. Their first album, 'Metal Crusade,' came out in 1985 and included the track 'Combat Metal,' which gave a name to the aggressive style they played.
They put out three more albums through 1991, with Dennis Stratton from Iron Maiden joining as vocalist at one point. Songs like 'Anubis Lord Of The Dead' and 'Battle For Freedom' kept to their themes of war and mythology, delivered with heavy riffs and pounding drums.
While some found their lyrics too graphic, the band stuck to their approach without much compromise. They didn't last long as a recording act, but 'Combat Metal' stayed in rotation for fans who liked their particular blend of traditional metal and harder-edged thrash.
