Background notes

Archive material and source history

fiREHOSE formed in Los Angeles in 1984, after the members' previous band Minutemen ended with the death of D. Boon. Mike Watt on bass, Ed Crawford on guitar, and George Hurley on drums decided to keep playing together under a new name. They put out five albums between 1986 and 1995, starting with 'Ragin' Full On' and ending with 'Big Black Bug Jamboree'.

Their sound was a noisy, experimental take on rock, built around Watt's driving bass lines, Crawford's distorted guitar, and Hurley's heavy drumming. Songs like 'Another Theory Shot to Shit' and 'Brave Captain' mixed punk energy with odd structures and melodic hooks. The band never broke through to a wide audience, but they developed a dedicated following for their uncompromising approach.

fiREHOSE stopped playing in 2000. Their records, especially 'Fromohio' and 'Flyin' the Flannel', remain touchstones for listeners interested in that era's more adventurous guitar rock.
