The Five Satins formed in New Haven, Connecticut in 1954 with Freddie Parris on lead vocals, Stanley Dortch, Ed Martin, Vinny Mazzetta, and Joe Richards. They were one of many young vocal groups working out harmonies in the mid-1950s, but their 1956 recording "In the Still of the Night" became something different, a slow, haunting ballad that would define their sound and outlast most of their contemporaries.
That song reached the top of the Billboard R&B chart and became their signature piece, though they had other solid recordings like "Little Star" and "To the Aisle." The group faced legal disputes over the rights to "In the Still of the Night," which complicated their career at a time when doo-wop was peaking.
Freddie Parris was convicted of murder in 1961, which effectively ended the original lineup. The Five Satins' story is mostly remembered for that one perfect recording, "In the Still of the Night", and the complications that followed it.
