Florence Ballard was born in Detroit in 1943 and started singing with a local doo-wop group called The Primettes when she was about 15. That group became The Supremes, and her voice helped define their early sound on Motown hits like "Where Did Our Love Go" and "Baby Love."
She sang lead on the 1966 Supremes track "It Doesn't Matter How I Say It (It's What I Say That Matters)," a song she reportedly disliked. After leaving the group, she recorded solo material including the song "Love Ain't Love."
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
