Florence Valentin was a French synth-pop group active in the early 1980s. They had three members: Florence Arman on vocals, Valentin Furnon on keyboards, and Thierry Maton on drums. Their sound drew from the UK synth-pop of the time, but they sang in French and worked that into their arrangements.
Their debut album, '16 Tonnes,' came out in 1983. The title track became their best-known song. They followed it with a second album called 'Suite' in 1984, which took a more experimental turn. The band's stylized image and French lyrics kept their appeal mostly within France, despite the broader European synth-pop wave.
They released just three studio albums together. After their initial run, the members pursued separate projects. Florence Arman's voice and Furnon's synth work defined their recordings, which have held up as documents of a particular moment in French electronic music.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
