Flying Circus formed in England in 1967 with Peter Sinfield on vocals and lyrics, Ian McDonald playing various instruments, Michael Giles on drums, and Greg Lake handling bass and vocals. They put out a debut album called 'The Cheerful Insanity of Giles, Giles and Fripp' before releasing 'Let There Be More Light' the following year.
That 1968 album gave them their most recognizable song, the title track 'Let There Be More Light.' Sinfield's lyrics on it touched on spiritual themes over a sound built from the band's varied instrumentation. Their music was complex enough that it didn't always connect with wider audiences, and internal disagreements about direction created friction within the group.
